Little attention has been given to girls’ football in the West Nile sub-region, yet the region is home to talents waiting for an opportunity to shine.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, the Alur Kingdom took another step towards changing that story, hosting the fifth edition of the KOPU P’MIN UBIMU girls’ football gala at Nyaravur Primary School playground in Nebbi District, where Jonam were crowned champions of the 2026 edition.

The tournament, also known as the Girls’ Football Gala, has grown beyond the pitch, providing girls with a platform to showcase their footballing abilities while raising awareness about issues affecting their lives.
This year’s edition ran under the theme “Kick Barriers: Girls’ Football for Leadership, Health and Rights,” highlighting the role sport can play in empowering girls and opening doors to opportunities that have often remained out of reach.
The tournament’s journey reflects its growing footprint across the Alur Kingdom. The third edition was held in Jonam, Pakwach District, where Okoro emerged victorious, before the fourth edition moved to Okoro in Zombo District, with the hosts again claiming the title.
This time, Jonam had the final say, lifting the 2026 crown and adding their name to the tournament’s growing history.

The girls’ football gala was part of the kingdom’s wider sporting celebrations, which also saw Padyere crowned champions of the 2026 KOPU P’NYARWOTH (Princess Sandra Netball Cup), underlining the kingdom’s commitment to promoting girls’ participation in sport.

The Alur Kingdom partnered with MEMPROW Uganda to organise this year’s event, with support from Girls First Fund, Pepsi, Zombo District Football Association, Pakwach District Football Association and Nebbi District Football Association.
Beyond the goals, tackles and celebrations, the gala carries a wider message: girls deserve the chance to play, lead and thrive. By creating space for young female footballers, the initiative seeks to ensure that talent is not limited by gender or a lack of opportunity.

The event also formed part of activities leading up to the coronation anniversary of His Royal Majesty Ubimu Phillip Olarker Rauni III, King of Alur.
As Jonam celebrate their triumph, the bigger victory lies in giving girls across West Nile a platform to be seen, heard and recognised. Their football dreams deserve more than a day in the spotlight.
