The Future is Now: FUFA Unleashes New Academies League to Ignite Grassroots Talent

As of 16th March 2026, The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) officially launched the FUFA Academies League, a youth competition aimed at strengthening grassroots football development in Uganda.

The introduction of the Academies League forms part of FUFA’s broader strategy under its Technical Master Plan (2023–2030). The FUFA President stated that the plan is designed to create sustainable football development structures, focusing on early talent identification, player development, coaching education, and organized youth competitions across the country.

“Today we are launching a tournament starting with boys under the Technical Master Plan to identify and develop good players for our league and also support preparations for our senior teams. This initiative is a trial phase and if it proves successful, we shall expand it to other regions across the country. The program is under the guidance of FIFA and we are also still in search of more contributors to support and strengthen the football system in Uganda,” Moses Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, stated.

Through initiatives like the Academies League, FUFA aims to build a stronger development pathway that will nurture young talent and contribute to the long-term growth of Ugandan football.

The launch brought together representatives from 20 participating football academies that will take part in the inaugural edition of the league.

The FUFA president mentioned that Academies League is designed to support the development of children born between 2011 and 2012,, giving young players a structured platform to compete while improving their technical and tactical abilities. The league will feature 20 academies, with teams competing throughout the season before one overall winner is crowned.

During the launch event, each academy received 10 balls from FUFA to support training and match preparations ahead of the start of the competition.

The league’s executive structure includes three former players who previously featured in the Ugandan league and Academies . Yasser Mugerwa and Benjamin ochan were present at the launch and are expected to bring valuable playing experience and knowledge to the management of the youth competition.

The league will be played across the Buganda and Kampala regions, with the official kickoff scheduled for 22 March 2026.
