Midigo Calvary FC’s Brave Fight Ends in Relegation After Grueling UPL Campaign

Fresh from a historic promotion to the Uganda Premier League, Midigo Calvary FC entered the 2025/26 season carrying the hopes of West Nile football fans. The club had conquered the FUFA Big League in style, earning promotion as champions after a memorable campaign built on resilience, unity, and strong home performances at Midigo Primary School playground.

But the jump to Uganda’s top flight proved brutally demanding.

What began as a dream season slowly turned into a painful survival battle as Calvary struggled to match the intensity, depth, and experience required in the Uganda Premier League. Week after week, the Yumbe-based side fought courageously, yet results rarely went their way.

The warning signs appeared early in the campaign. Goals became difficult to score, while defensive lapses repeatedly punished the newcomers against more established sides. Their struggles were reflected in a painful 17-match winless run — one of the longest droughts in the league this season.

Despite the setbacks, Calvary never completely surrendered.

At Midigo, the club remained stubborn and difficult to break down at times, frustrating several top teams. Their goalless draw against eventual title contenders Vipers SC earlier in the season showed the fighting spirit that defined much of their campaign. Even later in the season, Vipers needed a dramatic late winner to edge Calvary 1-0 in Kitende, highlighting the determination the relegation-threatened side continued to show.

The second round brought renewed hope.

With relegation staring them in the face, Calvary produced a late surge that briefly reignited belief among supporters. Surprise victories, including a morale-boosting win over KCCA FC, gave the club a fighting chance of survival. The team began showing greater organization, improved attacking intent, and the hunger of a side unwilling to disappear quietly.

However, the gap proved too large to close.

Critical defeats in key relegation battles ultimately sealed their fate, and the club’s hopes of a miraculous escape faded in the closing weeks of the season. What hurt most was that the resurgence arrived slightly too late after months spent chasing safety from the bottom of the table.

Still, amid the disappointment, there were positives worth celebrating.

Players like Lawrence Olaboro — who had starred during the promotion-winning campaign and earned recognition as one of the club’s standout performers — continued to symbolize the fighting identity of the team. The club also succeeded in bringing top-flight football to West Nile, inspiring supporters across Yumbe and the surrounding region.

For a debut season at the highest level, Calvary’s journey exposed both the beauty and cruelty of football. Promotion brought unforgettable memories, but survival required consistency, squad depth, and experience that the club was still building.

Now relegated to the FUFA Big League, Midigo Calvary FC faces a new challenge: rebuilding stronger and preparing for another push toward the top flight.

The 2025/26 campaign may end in heartbreak, but for the people of Midigo and West Nile, the dream is far from over.
